Diverse Academies Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Lee Beesley as the principal of Horizons Academy, a brand-new specialist provision in Mansfield, set to welcome learners from January 2026.

With a strong track record in both mainstream and specialist education, Lee brings almost two decades of experience in teaching and leadership, having worked across secondary schools in Lincolnshire. Most recently, he served as head of academy at a school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs in Lincoln.

Reflecting on his new role with Diverse Academies, Lee shared his excitement: “Being able to lead the school from its initial build is an incredible opportunity and one that I am relishing. The vision of Diverse Academies Trust aligns perfectly with what we want to achieve at Horizons — to raise aspirations and create brighter tomorrows for young people who have struggled in mainstream education.”

Horizons Academy has been carefully designed to meet the specific needs of students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), offering small class sizes, high staff-to-student ratios, and a nurturing, homely environment. The school also boasts excellent outdoor facilities, including two artificial football pitches and a multi-use games area.

In his first year, Lee will focus on building strong, positive relationships with learners and their families — something he describes as the foundation of successful education.

“Creating a safe, consistent and nurturing environment is essential. I lead with integrity, and under my leadership, being your best is non-negotiable. Staff and students will see me regularly — I believe in leading by example.”

The new principal’s vision extends beyond the school gates with a commitment to working in partnership with local services, families and the wider community to ensure learners are well-supported. Over time, Lee hopes Horizons Academy will be seen as a beacon of excellence in specialist education across Nottinghamshire.

Looking ahead, Lee shares his ambitions and vision for the school and its 160 learners:
“We will continue to evolve by listening to our learners and families, and by shaping a curriculum that adapts to their needs. Together, we’ll build something truly special — a place where young people can grow, achieve and look forward to the future.”

Horizons Academy is part of Diverse Academies Trust and will open in phases in line with plans agreed by Nottinghamshire County Council.
