The highly anticipated Diverse Academies inter-academy quiz this year expanded to two events, each hosted at Retford Oaks Academy. Our inaugural inter-primary academy quiz was held on Tuesday 13 March 2018, followed by on Wednesday 14 March, our now annual inter-secondary academy quiz.

Pupils from across five of our primary academies – Bracken Lane, Redgate, Samuel Barlow, Thrumpton, Tuxford and Wainwright, and students from across our seven secondary academies – East Leake, Holgate, National Church of England, Queen Elizabeth’s, Retford Oaks, Tuxford and Walton – took on the challenge of competing against each other in a test of knowledge, in true ‘University Challenge’ style.

Each academy had ten participants with five taking part in each round. Each competing secondary team were given starter questions worth ten points. The successful team who answered the starter question correctly had a chance to go for bonus questions worth five points. This went on for seven rounds, with bonus quick-fire rounds between each main round. For the primaries there were four rounds, with five questions per round.

With all sorts of rules concerning not having the same students on the team for more than two consecutive rounds, and losing five points for wrong answers in the quick-fire rounds, the teams from all the academies set off on an exciting quiz journey. Secondary students had to answer questions on a range of diverse subjects such as maths, science, geography, classical music and literature – many of which were taken from university-standard questions, while primary pupils answered questions on English, maths, science and general knowledge. At the end of the primaries quiz a tie break question had to be played to decide the winning team.

A huge congratulations to both East Leake Academy, for taking the coveted first place prize in secondary academies quiz, and to Bracken Lane Primary Academy for becoming the first primary academy quiz champions. A further well done to all of the pupils and students who took part – you are a credit to your academies and have made us all very proud.
